  • Submitted by: Rachael Hamilton, Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 17 December 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-02579

That the Parliament notes the UK Tree of the Year 2021 awards; recognises that the competition was held across social media, with a shortlist of 10 finalists selected from hundreds of nominations across The Woodland Trust’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts using #TreeoftheWeek; congratulates the winner, the lone hawthorn tree at Kippford, Dumfries and Galloway, which is understood to have won 38% of the vote; commends the finalists, including a Borders lone ash tree finalist, which is found in the ruins of St Mary’s Kirk, Ettrick Valley, near Selkirk; understands that the tree is located in what was once the ancient Ettrick Forest, and notes the widespread devastation to woodland and forestry that has been caused by the Arwen and Barra storms.
