Ponesimod Approved by the Scottish Medicines Consortium

  • Submitted by: Monica Lennon, Central Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 09 December 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-02423

That the Parliament welcomes the news that ponesimod has been approved by the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) to treat relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS); understands that this treatment option has been shown to reduce relapse rates, lessen fatigue-related symptoms and improve quality of life; notes that ponesimod is taken as a tablet orally once every day; welcomes that there are now seventeen treatments available for MS on NHS Scotland, when, 20 years ago, there were none; considers that, despite this progress, oral MS treatment options are still limited in number, and that many people with MS will benefit from this new oral option; recognises that Scotland has a high prevalence of MS; notes that the approval of ponesimod was also welcomed by the MS Society Scotland, and considers that, thanks to hard-won advancements in research, experts have never been closer to stopping MS.
