Frank To’s Work on the Humanium Metal Initiative

  • Submitted by: Edward Mountain, Highlands and Islands, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 09 December 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-02407

That the Parliament commends Frank To, an Art and Design Lecturer based at the University of Highlands and Islands (UHI), for his role in the Humanium Metal initiative; understands that Humanium is a type of metal made from transforming firearms, which have been obtained through programmes for the destruction of illegal weapons, into non-lethal commodities; further understands that the income generated from this initiative is re-invested into communities that have been adversely affected by gun violence; welcomes that Humanium Metal is part of IM Swedish Development Partner’s strategy to contribute to fulfilling the United Nations Agenda Goal 16; understands that Frank To has been commissioned by IM Swedish Development Partner to create a new paint colour using Humanium Metal powder and to use it to make artwork to be sold to raise funds for violence-prevention programmes; commends Frank To for being one of four Scottish artists selected for the Royal Ulster Academy exhibition at the Ulster Museum in Belfast, at which his art work sold out, with some being bought by the Northern Ireland Executive for its public collection; understands that the artwork he exhibited at the Society of Graphic Fine Art in London also sold out, with Frank again being one of only four Scottish artists selected, and wishes Frank further creative success in future ventures.
