Scottish SPCA Campaign #KeepMeOffYourXmasList

  • Submitted by: Meghan Gallacher, Central Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 03 December 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-02366

That the Parliament welcomes the campaign #KeepMeOffYourXmasList, which has recently been launched by the Scottish SPCA; acknowledges that this campaign was launched due to the news that four puppies were found in the Aberdeenshire area after being reportedly abandoned by an Irish gang that is thought to dominate the low-welfare puppy breeding trade within Scotland; notes the reports from the Scottish SPCA that, between 1 January and 31 October 2021, the animal helpline received 1,059 calls regarding low-welfare breeding, which is understood to be a 34% rise since 2020 when 702 such calls were recorded; further notes that, so far in 2021, the Scottish SPCA reports that it has seized 56 puppies, which adds to the 105 puppies saved by the organisation in 2020, and highlights that if members of the public have specific concerns about the low-welfare puppy trade in Scotland they are encouraged to report this to the Scottish SPCA confidential animal welfare helpline.
