When the Highlands Humbled Spurs

  • Submitted by: Edward Mountain, Highlands and Islands, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 23 September 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-01322

That the Parliament acknowledges the 100th anniversary of Tottenham Hotspur's 6-3 defeat to a Highland XI comprised of players from two Inverness-based Highland League clubs, Caledonian and Thistle; recognises the humbling nature of this defeat for "Spurs", a club that at the time held both the FA Cup and Shield; notes that its coach at the time was Peter McWilliam, who was born in Inverness and went on to become the club’s longest-serving manager; recognises that the two Inverness clubs continued as local rivals until merging permanently in 1994 as Caledonian Thistle, later Inverness Caledonian Thistle, and acknowledges the Highland’s proud legacy of footballing achievement over the last 100 years.
