Peebles High Donald Dewar Memorial Debate Winners

  • Submitted by: Christine Grahame, Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 21 June 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00448

That the Parliament congratulates Peebles High School pupils, Thomas Dunmur and Laura Eggleton, on winning the Donald Dewar Memorial Debate Tournament for 2020/21; recognises that they have also previously held the national title three times in the last five years; understands that the event, organised by the Law Society of Scotland, and this year held online, saw a total of 64 schools from across Scotland take part, debating a wide range of topics such as making voting compulsory and abolishing prison for all but those who have carried out violent crimes; notes that Peebles High School won the final round opposing the motion "This House would ban opinion polls being published in the build-up to an election", with Thurso High School, Fortrose Academy and The Royal High School also in the final; believes that this event provides a valuable opportunity for young people from across the country to hone their debating skills, and considers that the talent on show is a testament both to the skills of the young people and their dedicated teachers, including Thomas and Laura’s coach and debate club leader, Peebles High School English teacher, Rachel Hyatt.
