Hospitality Workers Driving Growth in Trade Unionism

  • Submitted by: Patrick Harvie, Glasgow, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 23 November 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-23443

That the Parliament understands that membership of the Unite trade union by hospitality workers has increased by 11.4% since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, making it the fastest growing sector for trade union membership; believes that the pandemic has exposed issues of low pay, insecure work and poor employment conditions that were already endemic in the hospitality sector; considers that Unite and the wider trade union movement have fought to challenge poor practice during the pandemic, and have secured significant action on behalf of workers; believes that high levels of union membership can help to drive up standards, and that this must be central to the sector’s recovery, and therefore encourages workers in the hospitality sector to join a trade union.
