Barkley Marathons

  • Submitted by: Christine Grahame, Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 26 March 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-12646

That the Parliament congratulates Jasmin Paris, from Midlothian, on completing the Barkley Marathons in Tennessee, USA, making her the first female runner and one of only 20 people to have finished the Barkley Marathons since it was extended to 100 miles in 1989, crossing the finish line with 99 seconds to spare before the 60-hour cut-off; understands that this particular ultramarathon is noted for its difficulty, due to 60,000 ft (18,000 m) of ascents and descents over rough terrain, often with no path; notes that Dr Paris has stated that, in addition to testing her own limits, she wanted to do this to inspire others and show people what women are capable of; hopes that her achievements will inspire women worldwide, and wishes her the best of luck in her future efforts.
