  • Submitted by: Emma Harper, South Scotland, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 08 January 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-11743

That the Parliament congratulates Wigtownshire Women and Cancer (WWAC), a volunteer-led group for women impacted by cancer, and their families, across Stranraer and Wigtownshire, on the launch of its latest social media video; understands that the video, available on the WWAC Facebook page and website, highlights the particular challenges faced by women in Stranraer and Wigtownshire when faced with a cancer diagnosis; further understands that these challenges include travel time to and from cancer treatment appointments at the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary (DGRI), an average of a 150-mile round trip from Wigtownshire for appointments, and to Edinburgh for radiotherapy, which is an average of a 250-mile round trip; understands that the video highlights that these journeys can impact women physically and emotionally, as well as financially; thanks all of the women who took part in the video, and thanks the co-founders of WWAC, Penny Halliday and Nicola Kelly, for the work that they do in providing support, befriending, short holidays, respite care and advocacy for women and their families impacted by cancer across Wigtownshire, and calls on NHS Dumfries and Galloway and NHS Scotland to continue at pace with work to alter current cancer pathway arrangements to improve outcomes for people in Dumfries and Galloway with a cancer diagnosis to ensure that they are offered treatment as close to their home as possible.
