Celebrating Scottish Sport's Community Hero 2023, Billy Roberton

  • Submitted by: Brian Whittle, South Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 12 December 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-11649

That the Parliament warmly congratulates Billy Roberton on being named Community Hero at the Scottish Sport Awards 2023; understands that the award seeks to recognise those who inspire others and drive positive change within their sport and local community; notes that Billy was also runner-up at the East Ayrshire Sports Council and Talented Athlete Awards in the category of Service to Sport 2023; believes that Billy’s coaching style, which simply encourages participation in sport regardless of age, ability, background or gender, has led to several national and international champions in 2023; understands that Billy has created the largest community club, outside Scotland’s major cities, through his successful restructuring and redefining of the Kilmarnock Harriers Club; further understands that this has involved creating a community offering that is delivered over seven days a week, 52 weeks of the year, and includes coaching children, those with additional support needs, para-athletes, elite performers, beginners and masters level athletes; welcomes the Kilmarnock Harriers Club partnership with Ayrshire College, which was formed by Billy to address club waiting lists through the development of the club’s coaching infrastructure, training-up, mentoring and supporting students to assist the club’s lead coaches; understands that the club restructuring was accomplished despite a life-altering accident earlier in 2023, while Billy was cycling to the track, which resulted in a broken hip and leg amputation; praises Billy’s commitment to the club and his community during his recovery from injury, and wishes him well in all his future endeavours with the Kilmarnock Harriers.
