Recognising the Severe Impact of Storm Babet

  • Submitted by: Maurice Golden, North East Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 23 October 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-10912

That the Parliament recognises the severe impact of Storm Babet on communities across Scotland and particularly those in the north east; understands that there is a multi-agency response in effect and commends the efforts of the emergency services, local authorities and utilities companies to preserve life, support residents and restore services; is concerned by reports of flooding across several areas of the country, including Aberdeenshire, Angus, Dundee and Perth and Kinross, and understands that many individual communities have been severely impacted, such as Brechin, Cyrus, Fettercairn, Marykirk, and Monifieth; understands that rest centres have been established to support evacuated households, and commends local communities that have contributed significant donations to help; further understands that SEPA has issued multiple flood warnings and is monitoring catchments across Scotland, and that there have been widespread impacts on infrastructure, transport and property, such as disruption caused to power supplies; recognises the efforts of utility companies to restore supplies, with Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) reportedly having reconnected more than 37,000 properties, although a number of properties still remain without power, and wishes all those aiding in support, rescue and repair efforts every success and safety.
