Sustainable Fashion Week 2023

  • Submitted by: Maurice Golden, North East Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 28 September 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-10647

That the Parliament welcomes Sustainable Fashion Week 2023, taking place from 25 September to 8 October 2023, as an opportunity to encourage more sustainable textile design, production and use; understands that the UN assesses the clothing and textile industry to be responsible for up to 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions; further understands that the British Fashion Council has identified current global clothing supplies to be enough to clothe six generations of people; believes that re-using garments is the best option for both consumers and the environment; further believes that businesses based on that re-use model, such as charity shops, swap-shops and repair and alteration providers, are key to reducing what it sees as the environmental impact of fast fashion, while providing greater value for consumers; considers that where new garments are produced, then greater use of native fibres, such as wool, has the potential to support more sustainable closed loop manufacturing systems, and welcomes the opportunity that, it believes, this would represent for Scotland’s farmers and rural communities.
