That the Parliament pays tribute to the life and career of Edson Arantes do Nascimento, better known as Pelé; acknowledges that Pelé is considered by many to be the best football player of all time; notes that Pelé is the only player in history to win three World Cups; further notes that FIFA officially credits Pelé with scoring 1,281 goals in 1,363 games; praises Pelé for being named the FIFA Player of the Century; recognises that Pelé visited Scotland on a number of occasions, most notably in 1966 when the Brazilian team was based in Troon and in 1989 when Scotland hosted the FIFA under-16 World Championship; understands that despite scoring against Scotland in 1966, Scotland is one of only three international teams unbeaten by a Brazilian team featuring Pelé; acknowledges that in his post-playing career, Pelé was politically active and was named as the UN ambassador for ecology and the environment; notes that he was also appointed as Brazil’s first Minister for Sport in 1995; understands that Pelé was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Edinburgh in 2012 for his significant contribution to humanitarian and environmental causes, as well as his sporting achievements; sends condolences to his friends, family, and fans across the world, and reflects on his powerful legacy to football, which it believes will last for generations to come.
