Mountaineering Scotland #ThinkWINTER Campaign

  • Submitted by: Liz Smith, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 14 December 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-07216

That the Parliament considers that it is important to promote the Mountaineering Scotland #ThinkWINTER campaign; notes that the #ThinkWINTER campaign is designed to inform mountaineers about the dangers and challenges of winter climbing and to target increasing online misinformation; further notes that the campaign is in partnership with numerous esteemed organisations, including Scottish Mountain Rescue, Mountain Training Scotland, Glenmore Lodge, Scottish Avalanche Information Service, Developing Mountain Biking in Scotland and Police Scotland; understands that the additional fundamental skills required for winter climbing in the Scottish mountains include avalanche and cornice awareness, use of ice axe and crampons, variable weather changes, more challenging navigation and freezing temperatures; notes advice stating that it is essential to consult the mountain weather forecast and avalanche forecast while planning a journey into the mountains, to ensure that the daylight hours are sufficient for the level of fitness, and someone is aware of the planned route; promotes the use of winter skills courses that are provided by various organisations, including Mountaineering Scotland and Glenmore Lodge, and commends the continued work of the Scottish Mountain Rescue service, largely made up by volunteers, who put themselves in danger to save the lives of others during this extremely busy time of the year.
