  • Date lodged: Thursday, 31 March 2022
  • Motion reference: S6M-03727

That the Parliament notes with great sadness the passing of David Hill, a member of staff of the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party group in the Scottish Parliament over many years, working for and loyally supporting a number of Members in various capacities, including for four years with Tom Mason and, most recently, as the Head of Office for Jamie Greene; expresses sincere condolences to his friends and peers at St Joseph’s College in Dumfries, the University of Dundee, and the University of Glasgow; notes David’s active engagement in university life, including as the Vice-President of University of Dundee Sports Union and Club Secretary for the University of Dundee RFC; recognises David’s talent in a range of fields, including scuba diving, sailing, golfing and as an accomplished bagpipe player; respects that David played an active and important role during the 2014 Scottish Independence Referendum and was passionate about political life and discourse; understands that David passed whilst engaged in his biggest passion in life, his love of and active involvement in rugby; recognises that David was a founder member of the Scottish Parliament’s rugby team and, as a key member of the team, was integral in the formation and success of this cross-party endeavour; notes that David was an avid Scottish rugby supporter, holding a Murrayfield season ticket and travelling to watch the national team in London, Rome and Dublin; believes that David played a substantial part in breaking down the normal political barriers of division and disagreement by being well-liked, much respected, perennially friendly and helpful to all those he worked with and knew across the political spectrum; considers that David was, in the words of his parents, living his best life when he was tragically taken from us; finds and notes much comfort in the widespread public messages of grief and condolence from so many; expresses deep and sincere condolences to his parents, Rodger and Sharon, their respective partners, Lesley and Gordon, his siblings, Alex and Georgia, his nephews, Freddie and Hunter, and all of his family, friends and colleagues, current and former, and commits to honour his memory in the true spirit of his work ethic by continuing his earnest endeavours to break down party divides and barriers to nurture genuine friendships and respect for all parliamentary colleagues, thus creating a lasting legacy of his impact on those who knew him and those who will now miss him dearly.
