Human Rights Day 2021, Police Scotland’s Role in Promoting Human Rights

  • Submitted by: Mercedes Villalba, North East Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 18 November 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-02160

That the Parliament notes that 10 December 2021 is Human Rights Day; recognises that the annual awareness event marks the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly in 1948; acknowledges the concerns of organisations, including Pax Christi Scotland, Freedom from Torture, Human Rights Watch, Justice for Columbia and Sri Lanka Campaign for Peace and Justice, regarding the training activities, which have been provided by Police Scotland’s International Development and Innovation Unit to the police forces of countries such as Sri Lanka and Columbia, which, it understands, have historical and current records of human rights violations, and notes the calls for it to immediately suspend all of its activities with these countries and for the Scottish Government, in light of its commitment to be a champion of international human rights, to launch a review into the activities of the International Development and Innovation Unit.
