Freedom from Fear for Shopworkers

  • Submitted by: Lorna Slater, Lothian, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 26 August 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00944

That the Parliament notes what it considers are concerning reports from the USDAW trade union, which found that over 90% of retail staff have been threatened, abused or assaulted at work over the last 12 months; notes the Freedom From Fear Campaign, run by USDAW, to promote a message of “respect for shopworkers”; understands that many retail workers are young workers; believes that low pay and insecure working conditions were endemic in the retail industry prior to the COVID-19 pandemic; notes that new protection for shopworkers came into force in Scotland on 24 August 2021, and believes that USDAW is justified in calling for similar protections for shopworkers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
