Community Clean-ups - Amendment

  • Submitted by: Paul Sweeney, Glasgow, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 12 August 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-00817.1

As an amendment to motion S6M-00817 in the name of John Mason (Community Clean-ups) leave out from "believes" to end and insert "; acknowledges the work of community groups, such as Cleanup Glasgow, which aim to promote personal responsibility and to begin a drive to change behaviour to tackle the litter crisis; notes that Cleanup Glasgow provides help and support to establish community clean-up groups in all areas of the city; acknowledges the positive work done in this regard by many schools and young people; notes the view that the burden should not be placed solely on young people and volunteers to compensate for the gaps left in the provision of local authority cleansing services due to what it sees as persistent budget cuts; further notes opposition to the suggestion that voluntary litter picks are a viable and sustainable alternative to sufficiently funded service provision, particularly due to the unsafe disposal of needles and drugs paraphernalia in Glasgow especially, and notes calls urging the Scottish Government to adequately fund and support the crucial work of cleansing staff in local authorities."
