Question
To ask the Scottish Government to what extent there is any evidence that newly-qualified doctors prefer to work at locations nearer to parts of the country from where they originate.
Answer
There is a range of evidence that indicates that location is a significant factor in the training choices made by newly qualified doctors. NHS Education for Scotland has recently published its first education research and innovation report which outlines research undertaken to assess the extent to which factors, such as location, influence the career choices and preferences of doctors.
Published research studies on the impact of geography on trainee career choices include the following.
What factors are critical to attracting NHS doctors into specialty or core training? A discrete choice experiment. (Scanlan et al) 2018
What factors influence UK medical students’ choice of foundation school? (Miah et al) 2017
What do UK doctors in training value in a post? A discrete choice experiment. (Cleland et al) 2016
