Question

To ask the Scottish Government what its policy is on planning applications to build on designated greenbelt.

Answer

Scottish Government policy on green belts is set out in Scottish Planning Policy in paragraphs 50-52 and 82. Specifically, paragraph 52 states that local development plans should describe the types and scales of development which would be appropriate in a green belt, and that these may include; development associated with agriculture; woodland and forestry; horticulture; recreational uses that are compatible with an agricultural or natural setting; essential infrastructure; development meeting a national requirement or established need (if no other suitable site is available); and intensification of established uses subject to the new development being of a suitable scale and form. All planning decisions should be made in line with the development plan unless material considerations indicate otherwise.
