Meeting of the Parliament [Draft]

Portfolio Question Time

Meeting date: 30 October 2025

Willie Coffey

To ask the Scottish Government whether it will consider making improvements to the Glasgow to Kilmarnock Sunday evening rail service. (S6O-05082)

Meeting of the Parliament [Draft]

Portfolio Question Time

Meeting date: 30 October 2025

Willie Coffey

The cabinet secretary will be well aware that Kilmarnock gave Scotland its first public railway line in 1812 and has an iconic place in Scotland’s railway history. However, in this day and age, more than 200 years later, my constituents have to put up with what must be one of the poorest services in Scotland on Sunday evenings. Having a train from Glasgow at 7 pm and a final one three hours later, at 10 pm, is hardly an example of a modern service and falls far behind the service enjoyed by many other towns, some of which are much smaller than Kilmarnock. Will the cabinet secretary give serious consideration to sorting out that anomaly before both she and I leave this place, so that my constituents can look forward to a service that meets the demands of modern times and at least matches what is in place elsewhere in Scotland?

Meeting of the Parliament

Alexander Dennis Ltd

Meeting date: 17 September 2025

Willie Coffey

We met Alexander Dennis’s senior management team at our Economy and Fair Work Committee not so long ago, and I was hugely impressed with their commitment to find a solution to save the business and jobs in Scotland. Does the Deputy First Minister share that view, and is she confident that, going forward, Alexander Dennis is in safe hands with good management and fantastic staff?

Meeting of the Parliament

GFG Alliance Business Operations

Meeting date: 11 September 2025

Willie Coffey

The Scottish Government has previously provided much-needed financial assistance to prevent the closure of the site at Dalzell. Can the minister say any more about how we are working to ensure that both the workforce and the financial interests of the Scottish Government are being protected?

Meeting of the Parliament

Housing Emergency

Meeting date: 2 September 2025

Willie Coffey

How will the Scottish Government prioritise the delivery of multiyear funding for the affordable housing supply programme? What positive impact is that programme expected to have in East Ayrshire and across Scotland?

Meeting of the Parliament

Portfolio Question Time

Meeting date: 18 June 2025

Willie Coffey

To ask the Scottish Government whether it will provide an update on any progress with the provisions in the Agriculture and Rural Communities (Scotland) Act 2024, including how they may affect farming and food production in Ayrshire. (S6O-04806)

Meeting of the Parliament

Portfolio Question Time

Meeting date: 18 June 2025

Willie Coffey

As the minister knows, we are very proud of the wonderful food offerings that we have across Ayrshire, many of which I have mentioned in the chamber before. One of our hopes is to see such products on local supermarket shelves much more often, so that local people can easily identify and buy locally produced food in order to support our producers. Will the 2024 act help to encourage that? Will the minister update Parliament on how he is engaging with the sector to improve the position on that?

Meeting of the Parliament [Draft]

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Statistics 2023

Meeting date: 12 June 2025

Willie Coffey

Despite the restrictions of devolution, Scotland continues to lead the rest of the UK in emissions reductions, with a 50 per cent overall reduction since 1990, as the minister said. Does he agree that Scotland would be in a better position to fight climate change if we had the same powers and financial levers as every other independent country has? Of course, I thank him for his considerable achievements for the people of Scotland during his term in office. [Interruption.]

Meeting of the Parliament [Draft]

Portfolio Question Time

Meeting date: 11 June 2025

Willie Coffey

To ask the Scottish Government whether it will support more collaboration between the three Ayrshire local authorities in the delivery of Gaelic educational services, in order to meet growing or unmet demand. (S6O-04769)

Meeting of the Parliament [Draft]

Portfolio Question Time

Meeting date: 11 June 2025

Willie Coffey

I welcome the Government’s proposals in the Scottish Languages Bill that will give more powers to communities to request more Gaelic-language education services. However, we have a clear issue in Ayrshire. Gaelic-speaking families face splitting up their children at school because all the places are full in East Ayrshire, which delivers a really good service and fulfils more than its obligations. There is no consistent similar level of service across Ayrshire and there is clear underprovision, because local authorities are not able to meet the demand.

Will the cabinet secretary assist with the immediate situation and help the authorities and the families with what is a good problem to have—the rising demand for more Gaelic education? Councils are finding it difficult to meet that demand under the current arrangements.
