Qualified Teachers in Scottish Schools

  • Submitted by: Ross Greer, West Scotland, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 07 June 2017
  • Motion reference: S5M-06009

That the Parliament expresses concern regarding reports that the Scottish Government’s plans to open the door to a Teach First model of initial teacher education; believes that this would permit graduates who have not completed teacher training to teach in schools for a year; understands with concern that this is premised on rushing graduates into teaching on lower pay than properly qualified teachers in order to save on costs; believes that this would undermine the high professional standards in Scotland's schools and lead to lower-quality education, and calls on the government not to proceed with this and instead ensure that all teachers remain fully qualified through the completion of appropriate teacher education courses.
