Equal? Still not, why not? Disabled People Face a Rise in Hate Crime and Poverty

  • Submitted by: James Dornan, Glasgow Cathcart, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 07 December 2016
  • Motion reference: S5M-02982

That the Parliament condemns the increase in prejudice, greater risk of poverty and discrimination that affects Scotland’s disabled citizens, which was highlighted in the recent report by Disability Agenda Scotland, Equal? Still not, why not?; notes that the report demonstrated a 20% increase in disability hate crime between 2013 and 2016, that only 43% of disabled people are in work, which is 30% less than in the wider population, with employment continuing to fall in groups such as those living with sight loss; considers that this is unacceptable in 21st century Scotland, and commits to doing all it can to help disabled people.
