World’s Poorest Countries Show Leadership and Way Forward for Renewables

  • Submitted by: Claudia Beamish, South Scotland, Scottish Labour.

  • Motion reference: S5M-02969

That the Parliament commends the 48 nations that form the Climate Vulnerable Forum for the inspirational leadership shown by their Marrakech Vision, which launched at the twenty-second session of the Conference of the Parties (COP22); notes that these nations, which are among the poorest in the world, including Bangladesh, Ethiopia and the Philippines, have promised to dramatically reduce their carbon emissions and rapidly move to 100% domestic renewable energy production; believes that these nations, who it considers have done the least to cause climate change, are challenging other countries, such as Scotland, which have rich renewables resources, to do more and go further; notes that, while Scotland has made excellent progress in generating renewable electricity, there is much more to do to switch to renewables in the areas of transport and heat, and that organisations, including WWF, have called for a target of generating 50% of all Scotland’s energy from renewables by 2030, and calls on all MSPs to build on the leadership shown by the Climate Vulnerable Forum nations, and to do more to promote renewables, including the economic benefits that they can have for all parts of Scotland, especially in rural regions such as the south of Scotland.
