Funding Secured for Maryhill Social History Project

  • Submitted by: Bob Doris, Glasgow Maryhill and Springburn, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 06 December 2016
  • Motion reference: S5M-02934

That the Parliament congratulates Cube Housing Association on securing £55,100 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for an important social history project; welcomes the project’s aim to celebrate the rich and colourful history of the Wyndford Estate; further congratulates the project on its ambition to engage with Wyndford Estate residents, for example in workshops and archiving efforts; points to the significance of Wyndford Estate as the former location of Maryhill Barracks, sometimes referred to as "Glasgow City Barracks"; notes the historical significance of Maryhill Barracks, where the Nazi leader, Rudolf Hess, was held for a period of time and, despite speaking good English, is reported to have required a translator to understand the Scottish brogue; further notes the interesting link that the barracks has to the 1919 Battle of George Square, the last instance of the reading of the Riot Act in the UK, where Maryhill Barrack’s troops were reportedly not deployed as the government feared that Scottish troops may side with demonstrating workers; wishes the project success, encourages residents to engage with the project in coming months, and looks forward to seeing their accomplishments.
