Three Years of Reviewing Accessibility

  • Submitted by: Ben Macpherson, Edinburgh Northern and Leith, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 01 December 2016
  • Motion reference: S5M-02890

That the Parliament wishes Euan’s Guide, which is a digital charity in Leith that helps to open up towns and cities to disabled people everywhere, a happy third birthday; notes that the website and app was founded in 2013 by brother and sister, Euan and Kiki MacDonald, after Euan became a powerchair user; further notes that, after experiencing great difficulty making enquiries about access at places they wanted to visit, they became aware of a general lack of disabled access information online; appreciates that Euan’s Guide strives to remove the fear of the unknown and inspire people to try new places, safe in the knowledge that they will be accessible; recognises that the database of information is built up by people sharing their experiences of disabled access wherever they go and recommending accessible places to visit; considers that it is a friendly, honest and empowering alternative to hours of web searching and phone calls; encourages everyone to contribute to its website, euansguide.com, to help create the largest possible database of accessible venues and improve the social experiences for all those with a disability; thanks Euan’s Guide for its significant work over the last three years, and wishes it all the best for the future.
