  • Submitted by: Lewis Macdonald, North East Scotland, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 30 November 2016
  • Motion reference: S5M-02869

That the Parliament congratulates 17-year-old Kieran Henderson on being named UK Young Coach of the Year at the UK Sports Awards; understands that this latest achievement completes a remarkable hat-trick of success, after him also been named Aberdeen Junior Coach of the Year and Scottish Young Coach of the Year for his work with Aberdeen FC Community Trust (AFCCT); recognises the significance of this achievement when considering that Kieran lives with autism and has never let his condition prevent him from motivating and engaging young people in the community; understands that his involvement in the community goes beyond his coaching, as he has also completed Dementia Friends training and takes part in Health Walks and TechnoGym sessions to support people affected by dementia; appreciates that he gives up his summer holidays to coach over 400 young people at three AFCCT football centres; recognises his volunteering with the AFCCT Equity Centre where Kieran works with the local Mosque to use football to help Muslim people in the city to access footballing opportunities around their cultural commitments; welcomes what it sees as the inspiration that Kieran’s success will provide for other young people to show the same enthusiasm, energy and commitment in their volunteering, and wishes him even more success in the years to come.
