Light up our Historic Buildings with the Saltire

  • Submitted by: Kenneth Gibson, Cunninghame North, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 30 November 2016
  • Motion reference: S5M-02860

That the Parliament is concerned at reports from the St Andrew's Day Campaign Committee that a civil servant at the Scottish Government has rejected plans to light up historic buildings across Scotland with the blue and white cross of the Saltire on St Andrew's Day; is astonished that this decision was reportedly made on the basis that displaying the Scottish flag would be "too political"; considers that Scottish buildings are lit with the Union Flag at any and every opportunity throughout the year; believes that bans on displaying the Scottish flag in Scotland by government officials is an extremely disconcerting development, reminiscent of bans of other displays of Scottish culture and identity that it considers have been carried out by UK governments over generations, and calls for the decision to be immediately reversed.
