Welcoming the Wemyss Caves Conservation Management Plan

  • Submitted by: David Torrance, Kirkcaldy, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 29 November 2016
  • Motion reference: S5M-02826

That the Parliament welcomes the publication of the Wemyss Caves Conservation Management Plan, commissioned by Save Wemyss Ancient Caves Society (SWACS); notes the six caves, which are situated on the north shore of the Firth of Forth to the east of the village of East Wemyss in Fife, are historically precious due to the number of ancient Pictish and other carvings inscribed on their walls, but are under a range of threats including coastal erosion, structural instability and rock surface lamination; recognises the four key objectives of this plan, to secure the stability of the caves, carvings and archaeological deposits, to manage and ensure safe access to the caves and carvings, to increase knowledge of the character and significance of the cultural heritage at the Wemyss Caves to support their management and to share and celebrate the heritage of the Wemyss Caves; acknowledges what it sees as the passion and commitment of SWACS, which has worked tirelessly since its inception 30 years ago to promote and protect these nationally important heritage assets and to ensure that they are not lost to Scotland’s future generations; appreciates the varied work that they carry out including book publication, hosting historical/archaeological lectures, open days, guided tours and a wide variation of promotional and educational work, and wishes the society all the best for the future.
