  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 13 November 2012
  • Motion reference: S4M-04803

That the Parliament notes the publication of the report, Giving it Away: The Consequences of an Unsustainable Mining Policy in Colombia, by ABColombia, the advocacy project of a group of five UK and Irish aid and development organisations with programmes in Colombia, CAFOD, Christian Aid, Oxfam, SCIAF and Trócaire; further notes that the report highlights what it considers to be the devastating impact of the mining industry on communities in Colombia; thanks the indigenous leaders of the Awá community in Colombia for sharing their experiences with the Cross-Party Group on International Development on 6 November 2012; supports the recommendations set out in the report; urges the UK Government to uphold its commitment to implementing the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights by ensuring that UK-registered companies do not contribute to or cause human rights harm overseas; understands that there is increasing investment by UK-registered companies in Colombia, and calls on UK-registered companies to comply with indigenous peoples’ right to free, prior and informed consent in line with the International Labour Organisation Convention 169 and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
