That the Parliament commends the partnership between RSPB Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Nicolson family on the success of the Shiant Isles seabird restoration project; congratulates the project on its recent declaration of the rat-free status of these internationally significant seabird islands; recognises the benefits that the work stands to bring to Atlantic puffins, Manx shearwaters and storm petrels on the isles; notes the global importance of Scottish islands to breeding seabirds; highlights what it considers the threat that invasive species present to Scottish islands and their natural heritage; considers that restoring and maintaining, through biosecurity measures, the predator-free status of seabird islands is vital for safeguarding Scotland’s seabird populations, which face multiple threats on land and at sea and are undergoing severe declines; recognises that island restoration projects such as this comprise critical climate change adaptation measures to build future resilience in those seabird populations; acknowledges the major contribution that EU LIFE funding has provided for such critical projects in Scotland, and recognises what it sees as the potential risk to funding sources for future projects in light of Scotland’s likely exit from the EU.
