Endometriosis Awareness Month

  • Submitted by: Rachael Hamilton, Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 03 May 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-13078

That the Parliament understands that March 2024 was Endometriosis Awareness Month, which aimed to raise awareness of the debilitating condition that affects one in 10 women in the UK, which, it understands, is similar to the number affected by diabetes or asthma; understands that endometriosis is a long-term condition that sees tissue similar to the lining of the womb grow in other parts of the body, generally on organs in the pelvic cavity, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes and bowel, which can be painful and have devastating impacts on a woman’s education, personal and professional relationships, mental health, and quality of life, and which charities in the Scottish Borders, such as Endometriosis South of Scotland, have been championing for women; further understands that findings published by Endometriosis UK to mark the start of Endometriosis Awareness Month in March show that 74% of men do not know what endometriosis is, and 56% of people are unable to name any symptoms of the condition, emphasising what it sees as the need for Endometriosis Awareness Month to educate the general public about this condition; understands that Endometriosis UK says that a lack of education in schools is contributing to societal taboos in talking about female health, which delays access to treatment and increases diagnosis time, which averages what it considers to be a deplorable 7.5 years, and thanks Endometriosis UK for its hard work in raising awareness of this condition that affects so many women across the country.
