St Patrick's Day 2024

  • Submitted by: Fulton MacGregor, Coatbridge and Chryston, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 09 April 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-12737

That the Parliament notes the celebration of St Patrick’s Day on 17 March; understands that 2024’s theme was "Ireland's Future in the World”, which focused on young Irish people, Ireland’s diaspora, and their perspectives about the world of the future and Ireland's place in it; recognises Coatbridge’s long-standing place as a home for the Irish diaspora in Scotland, with, it understands, more than double the amount of Irish-born residents living there, compared with the rest of Scotland; congratulates the organising committee of the 2024 St Patrick’s day festival in Coatbridge; appreciates that the festival programme included street fairs, quizzes, music, ceilidhs, food, drink and more entertainment; understands that the St Patrick’s Primary School choir opened the St Patrick’s Day festival with a performance for the community and the Consul General of Ireland in Edinburgh; wishes the festival continued success into the future; notes the close links that Scotland has had with its Irish neighbours across the North Channel in the previous millennia, and anticipates continued close Hiberno-Caledonian links and friendship for millennia to come.
