Glasgow School Girl Wins Young Speakers Scotland Public Speaking Competition

  • Submitted by: Annie Wells, Glasgow, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 27 March 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-12665

That the Parliament congratulates Tanisha Thapar, from the High School of Glasgow, who won the final of the Young Speakers Scotland Public Speaking Competition in the junior section for S1 to S3 pupils; believes that the speeches were of an extremely high quality, with judges treated to moving, humorous and inspiring stories that took inspiration from speakers’ personal lives and posed powerful questions; understands that different themes are set for the preliminary rounds and the final, and that the format allows pupils to present a creative speech of five minutes on a very broad topic, which, it believes, provides a forum for the pupils to develop their own personal speaking style and to build confidence in articulating and sharing their ideas; believes that these are skills that will help them at school and throughout their everyday lives; understands that recent themes have included topical subjects and literary quotes, and that speakers are expected to answer questions after their speech, posed by the adjudication panel, to help ascertain how well-researched the speaker is, and acknowledges that, after much deliberation, the judges awarded the junior prize to Tanisha Thapar.
