Promoting University Mental Health Day

  • Submitted by: Jamie Greene, West Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 07 March 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-12438

That the Parliament marks University Mental Health Day, which takes place on 14 March 2024; welcomes the event hosted by the Samaritans on University Mental Health Day to improve education and awareness about mental health among university and college students; understands that the theme of the event is "belonging", with the aim of bringing together the student community; further understands that reports of low mental wellbeing are prevalent among university students, and welcomes the campaign to improve mental wellbeing and widen access to support for students; understands that the Edinburgh Samaritans, in partnership with Edinburgh Nightline, the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh Napier University, will be holding events throughout the day, including mindfulness workshops and a free daytime festival open to students across all colleges and universities in Edinburgh; considers that such events are vital in promoting important and honest conversations about mental health and learning new ways to cultivate mental wellbeing; commends the Samaritans, the participating universities and all other collaborating organisations for setting a powerful example for organisations in other regions across Scotland to follow; hopes that colleges and universities across Scotland will follow suit, and encourages other universities and higher education institutions to work together with the Samaritans to hold Mental Health Days in all universities across Scotland.
