  • Submitted by: Liam McArthur, Orkney Islands, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 08 January 2024
  • Motion reference: S6M-11784

That the Parliament congratulates Nancy Scott from Westray, Orkney, on being awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Year Honours list; understands that Nancy is a well-known figure in Westray, having worked for many years as a teacher before taking on an active role in the island's civic life after retirement; commends Nancy's work in documenting and preserving Westray history through several books combining documentary and photographic history with collected memories of islanders; understands that Nancy has been involved in the Westray Heritage Trust, previously the Buildings Preservation Trust, for nearly three decades; pays tribute to Nancy and others involved in the Trust for their work in developing and preserving Westray’s important island heritage; recognises the role Nancy played in the production of a monthly island magazine, Auk Talk, now in its 12th year, which, it understands, provides invaluable income to support the Westray Heritage Centre; believes that the award of a BEM to Nancy Scott is thoroughly deserved, and wishes her all the best in the future.
