SRUC's Queen's Anniversary Prize

  • Submitted by: Willie Rennie, North East Fife, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 28 November 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-11438

That the Parliament congratulates Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) on winning a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education at a ceremony at St James’s Palace on 16 November 2023; understands that the Queen’s Anniversary Prize is the highest possible award for education institutions in the UK and is awarded by the current monarch; further understands that SRUC was awarded the prize because of its Veterinary Services Network and its work in transforming animal health and welfare, delivering education and knowledge exchange, and playing a leading role in helping to eradicate the major cattle disease, Bovine Viral Diarrhoea, in the UK and Republic of Ireland; considers that the Veterinary Services Network’s work has demonstrated political significance, as it provided the underpinning technical framework for post-Brexit sheep and goat exports to Northern Ireland; commends SRUC’s work during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it repurposed its molecular biology facility to test human coronavirus samples; acknowledges that this is the second time in six years that SRUC has won a Queen’s Anniversary Prize, having previously won in 2017 for its dairy genetics study, which, it understands, is the world’s longest-running, and believes that winning the prize this year is a significant achievement that demonstrates SRUC’s unique contribution to scientific excellence and innovation.
