Reports of £4 Million Budget Cuts at UHI

  • Submitted by: Rhoda Grant, Highlands and Islands, Scottish Labour.
  • Date lodged: Friday, 22 September 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-10560

That the Parliament notes reports of an announcement, which, it understands, was made in an email sent to staff by University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) management on 14 August 2023, setting out its intention to make £4 million in budget cuts, including a £3 million cut to the staffing budget; understands that this equates to up to 44 roles being lost in the university’s executive office, including by compulsory redundancy; believes that the university is an important employer in the Highlands and Islands region and that, as well as being disastrous for the individuals involved, the loss of jobs will also have a significant negative impact on the economy of the region; considers that job losses of the scale reported will also be detrimental to the student experience at UHI and to the provision of higher education in the Highlands and Islands region; notes reports of the ballot for strike action and action short of strike by members of the University and College Union at the university, and calls on all parties to come together to find a sustainable solution to address UHI’s financial issues without large scale redundancies or disruption to students’ education.
