Over the 30 years for which I have been involved in this line of work—and, indeed, over the 35 years of Scottish Women’s Aid—Scots law has evolved to take account of the changing times in which we live. The Matrimonial Homes (Family Protection) (Scotland) Act 1981 reflected the recognition that women were no longer subject to the whims of the man with whom they lived and could ask for him to be excluded from the family home if he was using violence against them.
