I am very much a product of the south and I am especially proud of that.For my sins, I am an economist by training, and I want to make my first speech a plea for the Parliament to turn its gaze towards the economic needs of the south of Scotland in the same way that Scotland once turned to the needs of the Highlands in the 1970s and 1980s.
