If midwife-led units have a role to play, is it not essential that work is done to reassure sceptical expectant mothers that such units are perfectly safe and, where appropriate, offer the best care? How will the Executive work to boost public confidence in the units, which is essential to their long-term viability?

In every case, clinicians should take all relevant factors into account, including the age of the patient, before deciding on the best care and treatment option. What I did say, and what I will repeat, is that my priorities are to get the system right and to ensure that we have a replacement project that does the job that it is intended to do.Clearly, there are lessons to be learned. We have to get the best value for the public purse, so sometimes we will have to be prepared to consider public-private partnerships.
