The Culture, Tourism, Europe and External Relations Committee has written to the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, David Davis MP for a fifth time to ask him to give evidence on the UK Government’s position on Brexit.
The committee is looking for clarity on the relationship that the UK Government is seeking with the European Union, and the impact that would have on people and the economy in Scotland.
Convener of the Culture, Tourism, Europe and External Relations Committee, Joan McAlpine MSP said:
“The Committee has conducted considerable inquiry work into the implications of Brexit for Scotland since the EU referendum in June 2016. We believe that it is appropriate for a Committee of the Scottish Parliament to have the opportunity to question the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union on the future relationship that is being sought with the EU as this is an issue of such importance to Scotland.
“I find this deeply disappointing that we have written to him previously on five occasions inviting him to give evidence, I would hope that he will respond on this occasion”.
Deputy Convener, Claire Baker MSP said:
“The UK Government has indicated that it does not want to be in the single market or the Customs Union and Mr Barnier indicated on Monday that barriers to goods and services would therefore be unavoidable. It is crucial that we should be able to ask the Secretary for State to provide more detail on the implications of this for Scotland”.
