This briefing has been prepared to assist the Justice Committee in its consideration of the proposals for spending on justice issues.
The Justice Committee has indicated that it intends to focus this year’s scrutiny of the draft budget on: (a) prisons; and (b) the operation of the courts and provision of legal aid (for both civil and criminal cases). In light of this focus, the briefing presents information on:
- spending on the Justice and Crown Office & Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) portfolios
- a number of central government grants to local authorities to help pay for justice related activities
- spending on prisons, legal aid and the courts at a more detailed level
- developments and commitments which might have an impact on the level of spending required for prisons, legal aid and the courts
