Question
To ask the Scottish Government how aid from Scotland is being deployed in Malawi.
Answer
The Scottish Government has provided a total of £325,000 to support relief efforts in the areas affected by Cyclone Idai, which include Malawi.
The Scottish Government initially provided funding of £175,000 to Strathclyde University to support emergency flood relief in Malawi.
Thereafter, we provided a further £50,000 to Strathclyde University to continue this support for emergency relief. This £225,000 funding for Malawi is enabling our implementing partners, Scotland’s Hydro Nation Programme experts, who are in the region coordinating relief efforts, to deliver critical work to secure water supplies and treat contamination in the immediate aftermath of the disaster. Scottish Government officials continue to work closely with partners on the ground to support the relief efforts.
Following the launch in Scotland of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) Cyclone Idai Appeal for Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe, the Scottish Government also provided £100,000 as a donation to the DEC Appeal. DEC members and partners are working on the ground to deploy this aid providing urgent health assistance, food aid, water purification tablets and temporary shelter.
