Oxfam Scotland’s #SecondHandSeptember Campaign

  • Submitted by: Alison Johnstone, Lothian, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Wednesday, 28 August 2019
  • Motion reference: S5M-18634

That the Parliament welcomes the Oxfam Scotland campaign, #SecondHandSeptember, which is focussing on the increasing pressure that "fast fashion" is placing on the environment, and asking the public to pledge to say "no" to new and to buy second-hand items instead throughout the month; believes that this will help extend the life of donated clothing, support important causes, raise funds and reduce landfill; understands that the textile industry is reported to produce more greenhouse gas emissions than the shipping and aviation sectors combined and that 11 million items of clothing go to landfill every week; recognises that, to keep prices low, throwaway fashion is often made by garment workers from the world’s poorest communities, and calls on manufacturers and retailers in Scotland to ensure that at least a living wage is paid to all those involved in the supply of their products and for the textile industry to urgently do all that it can to reduce its contribution to the climate emergency.
