  • Motion reference: S5M-16758

That the Parliament congratulates the Data Lab on organising DataFest19, which, it understands, was the UK’s first two-week festival of data innovation; understands that the event, which was held in March 2019, saw more than 4,000 participants at 62 events across eight towns and cities; notes that it focused on people working with data together, by highlighting the impact of collaboration; welcomes its two-day international conference in Edinburgh, DataSummit, which attracted over 500 attendees; believes that this had an impressive line-up of speakers, including the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica whistleblower, Christopher Wylie; understands that the country’s largest data talent showcase, Data Talent, attracted 350 aspiring data science and engineering students to Glasgow to meet employers from some of the country’s leading organisations; acknowledges the festival’s outreach to younger people through the StatWars challenge and Women in Data Science fringe events, and believes that DataFest19 was a superb event and an ideal international showcase for Scotland’s burgeoning and talented data science community.
