That the Parliament congratulates the Vegan Society on the success of its Plate Up For The Planet campaign, which encourages people to go vegan for seven days to highlight how their diet contributes to climate change; understands that over 10,500 people have so far signed-up to the challenge and that, by removing animal products from their diet, they have saved 154,777kg of CO2e, which is equivalent to flying over 767,000km on a long-haul flight, or to the Moon and back; believes that emissions from animal agriculture is a major contributor to climate change; understands that, globally, the livestock industry generates as much greenhouse gasses as all transport combined; believes that going vegan is one of the most significant steps that a person can take to reduce their contribution to climate change, and can reduce an individual's carbon footprint by up to 50%; considers that the Scottish Government should take account of the carbon footprint of the food that is provided in the public sector, as well as its wider contribution towards public health, and that it should set a positive example by promoting the use of food that is as healthy, locally-sourced and as least carbon-intensive as possible, and urges ministers to be more ambitious when setting their targets for the agriculture sector in the climate change bill, in particular with regard to addressing methane emissions from animal agriculture.
