Bonnyrigg Fair Trade

  • Submitted by: Alison Johnstone, Lothian, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 21 February 2013
  • Motion reference: S4M-05694

That the Parliament congratulates Bonnyrigg, Lasswade and Poltonhall on becoming the first area of Midlothian to achieve Fairtrade town status following Midlothian's recent accreditation as a Fairtrade zone; understands that the criteria include the availability in local shops and cafes of fairly traded products such as tea, coffee, fruit and wine; commends pupils of Lasswade High School and Bonnyrigg, Burnbrae, Lasswade, Hawthornden and St Mary's primary schools for showing enthusiasm for fair trade; notes that the issue of fairly traded footballs led to an inter-schools football competition organised by the teacher, Jamie Dougal, the second of which is due to take place on 1 March 2013, and encourages other communities across Lothian region to pursue fair trade status to support a system that puts people before profit.
