Holyrood will be the setting for scenes of seduction, betrayal and even murder later today as Scottish Opera performs A Little Bit of Don Giovanni in the Scottish Parliament’s Main Hall.
Mozart’s famous opera will be presented in a 20-minute show performed by a singer, cellist and guitarist, accompanied by a storyteller and a set of colourful illustrations.
The mini performance is touring alongside Scottish Opera’s full-scale production and is designed to take opera into unusual venues and introduce it to new audiences.
Presiding Officer, the Rt Hon Tricia Marwick MSP said:
“These mini “taster” sessions are great way of introducing opera to new audiences and the Parliament is delighted to provide the stage today for one of Mozart’s most famous works.
“We are delighted to showcase the best of Scottish culture in the Scottish Parliament. I know that MSPs, staff and our visitors will enjoy the performance.”
The A Little Bit of … Don Giovanni performance will take place in the Parliament’s Main Hall on Thursday 07 November at 1.30pm. The Main Hall will be open to visitors as normal and the performance is free.
Background
Scottish Opera’s A Little Bit of… shows take opera out of the theatre into unexpected places, and are ideal for anyone new to opera. The shows are dramatized through the Japanese ancient art of ‘Kamishibai’ – the production uses a metre-wide black theatre box holding ten to twelve illustrations to tell the story.
A Little Bit of Don Giovanni follows Mozart's famous cassanova from one conquest to the next. But when his seduction of Donna Anna results in the death of her father, has he finally taken things too far?
Touring Scotland this Autumn, alongside Scottish Opera's full-scale production of Don Giovanni, this 20 minute bite-sized version of Mozart's masterpiece is a perfect introduction for anyone new to opera.
A Little Bit of Don Giovanni is completely free, with no booking required.
In May last year, the Parliament hosted Scottish Opera’s performance of A Little Bit of Tosca.
