A Scottish Parliamentary Committee and a Westminster Committee are to work together on social security.
The Scottish Parliament’s Social Security Committee and the House of Commons' Scottish Affairs Committee got together for the first time with academics from the Centre on Constitutional Change to discuss arrangements for social security and the devolution of powers.
The two Committees are likely to focus on how both the Scottish and the UK Governments are working together in the area of social security.
Sandra White MSP, Convener of the Social Security Committee said:
“The transfer of some social security powers from Westminster to Holyrood is undoubtedly extremely complex and something that has never been done before. But at the heart of what both Committees want to achieve is that people are able to receive what they are entitled to and that they are treated with dignity and respect.”
Pete Wishart, Chair of the Scottish Affairs Committee, House of Commons commented:
“Today’s session was very positive, with productive discussions on the topics we share common interest. As welfare policies fall within the remit of Scottish and UK Governments, they must work well together to achieve the best outcome for everyone. I hope we as committees can also work together in the future to ensure both Governments are held to account effectively.”
Professor Nicola McEwen, Associate Director of the ESRC Centre on Constitutional Change said:
"This was an exciting opportunity for our Centre to work with both parliamentary committees. We welcome the opportunity to inform their work and support their evolving relationship. It is an example of how university research can help parliaments prepare for the new constitutional landscape.
